Short biography
The award-winning British designer Rae Smith works regularly in a wide variety of styles and genres. This diversity has taken her from Slovenia to Broadway; from the English National Opera Studio to THE RING cycle in Strasbourg.
Opera designs include DAS RHEINGOLD, DIE WALKÜRE and SIEGFRIED (Strasbourg); SKELLIG (Sage, Gateshead); BIRD OF NIGHT (Royal Opera/Linbury Theatre); THE RAKE’S PROGRESS (Aldeburgh Festival); A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (La Monnaie, Brussels); DON GIOVANNI (Welsh National Opera) and THE MAGIC FLUTE (Opera North, Garsington and Scottish Opera).
Recent theatre productions include WAR HORSE (Olivier Award 2008, Evening Standard Best Design Award 2007; now in West End), ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL, ST JOAN, A PILLAR OF THE COMMUNITY and THE SEAFARER (also Broadway 2007/08) at the National Theatre; THE BIRDS (Gate, Dublin); for the Royal Shakespeare Company PEDRO THE GREAT PRETENDER by Cervantes (also West End) and AS YOU LIKE IT. At the Royal Court THE WEIR enjoyed huge success (also West End, Broadway and world tour). Her designs for OLIVER TWIST were seen in Harvard, on Broadway (OBIE Award) and in San Francisco in 2007 and her designs for AN IDEAL HUSBAND (Irish Times Award - Best Costume Designer 2009) were at the Abbey Dublin in 2008.
THE RITE OF SPRING (Fabulous Beast Company at the English National Opera 2009 - nominated for a 2010 Best New Dance Olivier Award).
