Short biography

Declan Randall has a degree in Stage Lighting Design and Arts Administration (B-Tech) from Tswane University of Technology (formerly Pretoria Technikon).

In 2000 he won a scholarship to attend the Broadway Lighting Master Class in New York City. He has been nominated for several awards and has won “Best Lighting Design” for ‘Shopping & F***ing’ as well as ‘African Footprint’ and most recently ‘Coupe’. He has designed lighting for more than 235 productions covering all genres of theatre including drama, dance, musicals and opera.

Declan has served as the Resident Lighting Designer for the Market Theatre, the State Theatre Dance Company, the Barnyard Theatres, Black Tie Ensemble and Opera Africa.

He designed both set and lighting for numerous productions including "Relativity" which has toured internationally and, most recently, "Hard Love" which played in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

His most recent credits include Cape Town Opera's acclaimed "Porgy and Bess" which toured to Cardiff, Edinburgh and London in 2009; "Princess Magogo" and "High School Musical" which toured Jo'burg, Cape Town and Shanghai.

He has published a book entitled "Theatrical Lighting Design - Making the Light Fantastic" and is currently writing his second book on the subject.

Declan now lives in London, but his company Congo Blue Design is still running in South Africa, so he can truly say that he has a "Joburg and a London office!"
