Wayne trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. His early work was in Manchester before he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company where he lit many productions for The Other Place, The Pit and Barbican Theatres. He was Lighting Supervisor for the Swan Theatre until 2007 where his designs include: THE ROVER, THE FAIR MAID OF THE WEST, EVERY MAN IN HIS HUMOUR, A JOVIAL CREW, TITUS ANDRONICUS, THE JEW OF MALTA, THE DUCHESS OF MALFI, EDWARD II, THE SEAGULL, TAMBURLAINE THE GREAT, THE COUNTRY WIFE.
RSC lighting designs in the West End include: SHAKESPEARE REVUE, THE CHERRY ORCHARD, ‘JACOBETHAN’ SEASON, THE TAMER TAMED, ‘GUNPOWDER’ SEASON, BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE, CANTERBURY TALES.
Wayne’s freelance theatre productions include: PRIVATE LIVES (Octagon Theatre), SNOW WHITE and CINDERELLA (Wyvern Theatre) VANEK PLAYS (London & Prague), MEDEA (Wyndham’s and New York), THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, NOT THE END OF THE WORLD (Bristol Old Vic), the 2009 and 2015 Pitlochry Festival season, four productions for Stage on Screen in Greenwich, five pantomimes for Qdos, several productions at the Octagon Bolton; PRIVATE PEACEFUL (UK tours and London season). He lit GODIVA AWAKES in connection with the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
His designs for opera include: JENUFA, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, TOSCA, THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, KATYA KABANOVA, CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN, MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, DON GIOVANNI, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, FALSTAFF (Longborough Festival), RAVEL DOUBLE BILL at the Royal College of Music; EUGENE ONEGIN, RINALDO, MADAMA BUTTERFLY (Grange Park); MIKADO, (D’Oyly Carte); LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR (Scottish Opera and Mariinsky, St. Petersburg).
Wayne received Olivier Award nominations for EDWARD II, TAMBURLAINE THE GREAT and MEDEA.
